For years, I have been following the artistic journey of Eugen Varzić, a solitary painter on the Croatian art scene, an autonomous individual outside of artistic groups and movements
By the end of the 20th century, as various experimental and conceptual art movements began to lose their appeal with the passage of time, figurative art gradually regained its place in the focus of art critics and the public.
Varzić’s works are not calming, but they initiate and emphasize movement, engagement and the exchange of thoughts and impressions. They do not provide the final answer
I approached the writing of this text about the painter Eugen Varzić, an exceptional figure in the Croatian art scene, from the stance that it should be viewed through the prism of an autonomous art
There are different types of love and passion. They are often directed towards other living beings.
To scratch beneath the surface of the everyday and simple. Doing what you love, loving what you create. Almost ritualistic.
Similarly, Varzić follows contemporary artistic considerations of figurative painting, as showcased in the major exhibition “Encounters New Art From Old” held in 2000 at The National Gallery in London.
Dreams, light as those in the midsummer night, or heavy and gloomy from the depths of winter, open up a diverse gallery of characters.
